Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk

Some might interpret Kansas' near-loss to Southern Illinois as cause for concern.

Not I.

The Jayhawks' underrated defense proved decisive, with timely stops and steals by Julian Wright, Darnell Jackson, and finally Russell Robinson making the difference.

Foul Play

I strongly disagree with the suggestion, repeated here by CBS SportsLine's Gregg Doyel, that a team should foul when up three and with the game winding down.

Is doing so good for any one particular team? You bet. But it is also bad for the game at large.

More later, if and when I have the opportunity to make this argument into a lengthy column (or at least a lengthier blog post).

That's Offensive

Seven of seven Saturday's eight winners are more efficient on offense than their opponents.

That is to say, they have this season scored more points per possession than the losers.

Offensive efficiency in parenthesis:

Ohio State (5) beat Xavier (17)

Butler (18) beat Maryland (33)

Texas A&M (6) beat Louisville (27)

Vanderbilt (22) beat Washington State (58)

Georgetown (2) beat Boston College (8)

Pittsburgh (10) beat Virginia Commonwealth (26)

North Carolina (1) beat Michigan State (35)

Only Indiana (16) lost to UCLA (25)

Interested in Sunday's offensive efficiencies? See below:

Tennessee (20) vs. Virginia (28)

Florida (3) vs. Purdue (67)

Wisconsin (23) vs. UNLV (49)

Virginia Tech (36) vs. Southern Illinois (86)

Oregon (11) vs. Winthrop (71)

Nevada (24) vs. Memphis (29)

Kentucky (14) vs. Kansas (15)

Texas (4) vs. USC (45)

Michigan State leads North Carolina 46-45 with 14:21 left. You've got to be kidding me...

An Oldie, but a Goodie

Ed Graney in Monday's Las Vegas Review-Journal, on UNLV's No. 7 seed:

The committee says RPI matters in the selection process. UNLV is 10th. It says a team's record over its last 10 games is important. UNLV went 9-1. It looks at the record against Top 50 schools. UNLV is 4-3. It puts heavy emphasis on road victories. UNLV had eight.

Which means this: If a team from a power conference had UNLV's resume and its 28-6 record, it is no lower than a No. 3 seed...

How can you explain a Duke team that was seeded seventh in its conference tournament, lost in the first round to a No. 10 seed and is a No. 6 in the NCAAs? How is a Southern California team with a 40 RPI, a worse schedule strength than UNLV, records of 5-7 against Top 50 teams and 2-3 in its last five games (including a 24-point loss to Oregon in the Pac-10 Tournament) a No. 5? How is Vanderbilt (49 in the RPI, 19 Division I-A wins, 2-3 in its last five games) a No. 6?

Miller Time

It's time Xavier fans get over Thad Matta's departure for Ohio State.

Granted, Matta should not have said "I'm not a candidate" for the Buckeyes' vacancy days before taking the job. But that was three seasons ago.

In the years since, Matta's successor, Sean Miller, has guided the Musketeers to 63 wins and 32 losses. He's taken Xavier to two NCAA tournaments, both of which ended in single-digit losses to higher-seeded opponents.

Had his team not blown a nine-point lead in the final three minutes of regulation, he would today be celebrated as a rising star in the coaching profession for taking down Greg Oden and the Buckeyes.

Seemingly oblivious to Miller's success, however, Xavier fans booed Matt on Thursday night, when the Ohio State coach came out to the Rupp Arena to floor to scout the Musketeers during their game against Brigham Young.

That kind of behavior is an insult to Matta, who coached Xavier to five NCAA tournament victories in three seasons in Cincinnati. But more importantly, it is an insult to Miller.
