Go Gators

3) Florida vs. (7) Georgetown: There is one reason -- and one reason only -- you can pass on Friday's contest if necessary; both the Gators and the Hoyas lack the go-to-guy leadership necessary to defeat either Villanova or Boston College and advance to the Final Four. Aside from those Elite Eight considerations, however, this should be quite a game. Both clubs play unselfish team basketball, generating more than 62 percent of field goals from assists. Both teams feature noteworthy centers, with Roy Hibbert's size and progress drawing rave reviews for Georgetown and Joakim Noah's lineage (he's the son of former French tennis champ Yannick Noah) and vibrant personality a more popular topic than Florida coach Billy Donovan's wardrobe. Both teams shoot exceptionally well from inside the arc. And both can play mind-numbingly good defense.

Prior to tonight's Final Four games, CBS ran a segment about an effort among some coaches to expand the NCAA Tournament. Apparently Jim Boeheim wants to add 3 to 10 teams. I believe it was Tubby Smith who mentioned expanding the field to 80. The alleged justification for this idea is that George Mason's run to the Final Four proves that teams on the at-large bubble are capable of making deep tournament runs, and therefore, we should let more of 'em in. The implication is that such a plan would help the "little guy." But that's not true at all, and I suspect Boeheim, Smith & co. know it. If we want to expand the NCAA Tournament in such a way as to help the little guy, there's a good way to do it, but it looks nothing like Boeheim and Smith's "tack on a few extra at-larges" plan.

I'm going to go the other way from Yoni's current main thread that his 60+ comments and say, let's talk about the regular season. The NCAA regular season is so flawed...I think the NCAA Tourney is exposing flaws in it, rather than the regular season being this great indicator that the NCAA tourney should try to match. What do people think?

Considering that this has been one of the best years ever for NCAA upsets, I figured my 2004 anthem "Glory, Glory, Cinderella!" was due for an update. So I made a few modifications (replacing "Gonzaga" with "Northwestern" -- meaning Northwestern State, of course -- was painful but necessary) and added a new verse. Oh, and I added a line making fun of Billy Packer. :) As before, it's set to the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Enjoy!
Flash back to 1999. Gonzaga University, a lightly-regarded Catholic school out of Spokane, defeated Minnesota, Stanford, and Florida to make a magical run to the Elite Eight before losing close to eventual national champion Connecticut. They haven't missed the tournament since, and has become one of the premier programs in college basketball.
