Blogroll

I updated my blogroll this past weekend. (Note in particular "traditional media blogs").

But given the blogosphere's rapid growth, the question is not if but how many blogs I missed. If you'd like me to add your site to my blogroll, kindly add a link to 'yoco :: college basketball' to yours, then email me with your request.

Note that updated links to blogs that cover subjects other than college basketball are forthcoming.

The Blogroll

is past due for an update. If your college (basketball) blog is missing from my left and right sidebars, please email me and I'll happily add a link.

I'll Be Back

Soon.

Please excuse travel-related delays this offseason.

(Astute and technologically-savvy readers will, however, note that over the past couple weeks yocohoops was moved to a much faster server. I also added Guidelines for submitting a New Diary).

Feedback...

I intend to watch both Kentucky-Utah and Illinois-Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With but a few games left in the NCAA Tournament, how could I not?

My column for Fox Sports (particularly when, as was the case today, it is picked up by MSN) goes out to a broad audience that includes many casual fans. Who rarely watch every Sweet 16 contest.

Given from my editor's request that I identify two "Can't-Miss" and two "Can Miss" games, I editorialized my preference. If the games you would choose to miss are different than the ones I chose, I'd be happy to hear why you're more interested in Kentucky-Utah than in Texas Tech-West Virginia or Arizona-Oklahoma State.

Also, and as a couple readers predicted I would do, I recently deleted several diaries. Not because I'm uninterested in attcks upon my character -- I make a best effort to respond to all mail, hate mail included, sent to my email inbox -- but because, as noted in the community guidelines, foul language, crude insults and disrespectful diaries are not welcome on this site.

Readers also made several comments that merit a response.

First, a reader noted that after I went to work for Fox Sports, I ceased blogging with the same fervor. Sad, but true. There is only a limited amount of time in the day. This coming week or next, however, I should be able to again post the (occasional) "Morning Roundup." After the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament, the roundup will return on a daily or near-daily basis.

Second, in a current diary, one reader criticized me for "walking the fence...if if if" in a recent column. Fair enough. But the reader must have missed the column’s subtleties. Clubs I expect to win are listed first, with a “will win/could lose” breakdown. Teams I imagine will lose are broken down second, with “could win/will lose” analysis. My predictions are out in the open -- for readers who review my piece with an open mind.

Third, multiple readers have requested I apologize to Utes Nation if Andrew Bogut & Co. defeat Kentucky. Will do. (But don't hold your breath. The 'Cats, although from a weak SEC, will beat the Utes).

Fourth, I received numerous emails about an error I (admit to have) made about Utah's loss to Kentucky in the 1996 Sweet Sixteen. Duly noted. My Fox Sports column has been updated to reflect Utah's 1996 loss. For the record, and despite the amusing suggestions that I do "no research" (as if I pulled the 0-5 number out of a hat), I do an extensive amount of research for my columns. In this particular instance, I made a mistake when reviewing the years and rounds in which the Utes have fallen to the 'Cats. [A reader also quoted (?) from an ESPN column in which Andy Katz suggests Utah is 0-6 against Kentucky. This would contradict not only my column/research, but ESPN's research for their Power 16...In other words, either this reader, ESPN or Andy Katz, (also) made an error.]

Fifth, a reader wrote (in a comment responding to a deleted post).

The clear implication of presenting [the fact that Kentucky has scored an average of seven more points than Utah in two Tournament games] is (that) Utah cannot score more points than Kentucky in their upcoming game. Of course, using this rationale, Utah had no chance to beat Oklahoma, who was averaging 24 points per game more than Utah after the first round of the tournament and was still averaging 7.5 points more per game after losing to Utah by 9.

S/he's right. Though his/her use of "no chance" is simplistic. The fact I cited provides evidence that Kentucky will probably outscore Utah. But as with any piece of pre-game evidence, it is inherently inconclusive. If there was "no chance" Utah would win, the Utes and 'Cats wouldn't play the game. I believe that there is "not much chance" Utah will win. But there is, after all, a reason they play the game...

As for Utah-Oklahoma...I had Utah in my Sweet 16. (See the Bloggers Bracket.)

That's it for now. Keep the feedback coming...

just in time

Two important updates.

First, all users -- not just registered users -- can now post comments in response to particular stories.

Second, registered users can now edit their Diaries.

Cool, no?

Responsive to the request of several readers, please find that registered users can now "Preview" and make changes to their New Diary Entries before they are published.

Many folks have also emailed to inquire about cross-posting to the Diaries. As I noted in my responses, I have no problem with registered users posting multiple entries from their blog to the Diaries. To the contrary, I would encourage folks to do so. All that I (kindly) ask, however, is that readers refrain from using the Diaries as exclusively a tool to promote their own blogs. Users should feel more than comfortable adding a link to their blog at the conclusion of their (comments and) diaries.

Diary Guidelines

It has come to my attention that several folks are posting plugs for their own blogs on the diaries. But the diaries were designed as a forum for community dialogue on this site, not as a means of publicity for other sites.

A friend with years of experience designing and managing websites emailed earlier today to suggest I enforce a "zero-tolerance, nuke-on-sight policy for self-links in the diaries."

I've taken his advice and deleted the diaries in question. For future reference, below please find all-new "Diary Guidelines" for yoco :: College Basketball.

(Registered users are more than welcome, however, to add a link to their blog in their signature. A user's signature automatically appears at the bottom of every single comment and diary by that user.)

The Diaries function as a community blog. Please adhere to the below-outlined guidelines. Failure to do so will result in access restrictions.
  1. Diaries must be previewed at least once. Please review your story carefully before submitting.
  2. Diary entries should be at least two paragraphs. If you’d like to draw attention to an interesting article or make a witty observation, please do so in a comment.
  3. Diary entries should be substantive. They are meant for news, analysis and commentary. Not insults or personal attacks.
  4. Pick your title carefully. Try your best to match the title with the diary entry. Please do not title your diary 'check this out', or 'must read.'
  5. Embed links to news stories, blog posts, and statistics you reference.
  6. Please check spelling and grammar before posting. Appropriate punctuation makes your argument more persuasive.
  7. Four diaries daily maximum. If you feel the need to post more frequently, I suggest you start your own blog! Add a link from your blog to mine, email me to let me know you’ve started a blog, and I’ll gladly add a permanent link from my site to yours.
  8. Use the “Extended Copy” box. If you diary is longer than three paragraphs, please use the extended entry box. In so doing, you’ll avoid cluttering up the community blog. While “Extended Copy” text won’t appear on the frontpage of the Diaries, visitors will be able to read your complete post by clicking on 'Read More, Link & Discuss'.
