If and when Karl Hobbs leaves George Washington for greener pastures, the Colonials would be well advised to hire Mike Davis.
Yes, Indiana's Mike Davis.
Mike, I believe, would flourish in an environment both well suited for success -- a major, trendy city, a school with a supportive but not overly demanding fan base and a challenging conference -- and free from the media spotlight and excessive negativity.
Could the Colonials do better? Perhaps, if they again select the right promising assistant. But could they do worse than Davis? You bet.
The Pirates just beat No. 14 North Carolina State, No. 25 Syracuse and Providence on the road, and suddenly, the Hall's 13-6 and 4-3 in the Big East. The NCAA tournament bid isn't such a far-fetched scenario...
And now, some want to believe that Orr is saving his job with this run. They want to believe that there's no way that he could make the NCAA tournament and get fired. That's the kind of narrow thinking -- the kind of fool's gold trap -- that could cripple the Pirates' program in the Big East...It isn't about Orr winning 13 games, or 16 or 20 this season with a couple of tough seniors who will be gone next year. It isn't about him reaching the NCAA or the NIT tournament. That's too shortsighted...
The Hall needs someone to sell tickets at Continental Arena, and they need someone to recruit. Seton Hall is desperate for someone dynamic and that's never been Louis Orr, and it never will be him.

-- The 10 Spot: Only CBS SportsLine's Gregg Doyel would after George Washington's comeback from a 17-point deficit to defeat Xavier argue the Colonials are overrated.
If anything, George Washington might be too physically gifted. This is a problem most coaches would love to have, because everyone Hobbs ran onto the floor Thursday night -- every single one of them -- was athletic enough to get a shot whenever he wanted. But with the exception of Hall and Elliott, none seemed to know the difference between a good shot and a bad one. Tall players launched early 3-pointers. Smaller players drove wildly into traffic. Mensah-Bonsu, the team's best NBA prospect, will dunk on you in one moment, then force a 5-foot airball the next.
-- Watch Me Now: Since joining the Colonial Athletic Association, Hofstra has hosted Old Dominion five times at Hofstra Arena. Including last night's game, four of those five contests have come down to buzzer-beaters (in which Hofstra is 3-1), with the fifth a 69-65 affair that wasn't over until the Pride made two free throws with five seconds left. The five Hofstra-ODU games at Hofstra Arena have been decided by a combined nine points.
-- WATN: Former University of Connecticut basketball player Eric Hayward, 32, has been charged with six counts of second-degree sexual assault.
-- That's WAC: Nevada's defense, rebounding, and toughness helped the Wolf Pack defeat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and move into a two-way tie for second with Utah State. Mark Fox, however, on Paul Millsap: "He's an NBA player playing in college."
-- GameDay: Jay Bilas has been everywhere, but he's never been to Gainesville.
-- Do You Believe in Magic? Michigan State alum Earvin Johnson is opening another Starbucks in Indianapolis.
-- Hall of Shame: A doubleheader previously affiliated with the Hall of Fame appears to be moving West, with Illinois, Kentucky, Arizona and Gonzaga likely to play in Phoenix the first weekend in December. Pairings have not been set.
-- Hear Ye, Hear Ye: The NCAA's infractions committee will today hold a hearing on whether or not Ohio State has received sufficient punishment for alleged violations.
-- If Looks Could Kill: More good press for Reggie Theus. The New Mexico Wing of the Gang of 500 LOVES him.
-- Cardinal Law: Thanks to Chris Hernandez's heroics (again), Stanford defeated Oregon. Might the Cardinal, winners of four in a row and seven of eight, make the NCAA Tournament? Yes. But Trent Johnson's crew needs at least one and probably two quality wins. See at Gonzaga February 11, versus Arizona on February 18, and at Washington on February 23.
