Him Look Pretty One Day

-- What's in a name? Does Oklahoma State's decision to term the Cowboys' edition of Midnight Madness "An Evening with Eddie?" signal Sutton's likely departure at season's end?

-- A must-see photo of North Carolina junior Reyshawn Terry here. So much for this season.

-- Luke Winn's latest, on Washington's recruiting bonanza, got me thinking. Why don't coaches and scouts ever compare white players to black players -- and vice versa? Winn, for example, quotes former Utah assistant Jim Marsh to the effect that Husky signee Spencer Hawes is the second-coming of Tom Chambers or Kevin McHale. Fair enough. But might not Hawes also play like a young Tim Duncan or Jermaine O'Neal?

-- Michigan forward Brent Petway was yesterday declared academically ineligible for the fall semester. His absence will hurt the Wolverines, but not as much as 10 other players' academic troubles will undermine their would-be schools. Or so I write in an upcoming Fox Sports column.

-- Oklahoma, Stanford, and...Wichita State. It is fair to say that Michigan State downgraded the level of "Spartan Clash" competition.

-- Woah. Marquie Cooke is out at Colorado State. Cooke, a Top 50 recruit coming out of high school, will soon look for a third home. Earlier this year, after a disappointing freshman season at Virginia Tech, he opted to transfer West.

-- Somebody forgot to tell Illinois freshman Chester Frazier that I write for Fox Sports; “Stephen A. Smith was like a basketball god so whatever he says is going to be influential to anybody. ESPN is the Mecca of college basketball.”

-- Good news for Matt Painter. Potential starting point guard Korey Spates was declared academically eligible after a four-month NCAA review of his high school record. Following the Tarrance Crump and Gordon Watt incidents, the Boilermakers needed Spates' appeal to go through.

-- The Albuquerque (NM) Tribune's Jeff Carlton, himself a blogger, previews New Mexico's 2005-2006 season by writing up magazines' assessments of the Lobos. Note that while Carlton blog-titles his article "No one knows what to do with the Lobos," his editors title the story "Preseason polls optimistic of Lobos' success."

-- Arizona will on Monday unveil plans for a new and long-awaited practice facility.

-- Michael Farkas of the Bristol (VA) Herald Courier previews East Tennessee State's first year in the Atlantic Sun. The Buccaneers return five experienced starters and expect several junior college transfers to contribute immediately.

-- Matt Doherty must have been unavailable. How else to explain North Carolina's decision to have Tar Heel alum and NBA veteran Kenny Smith host Midnight Madness?

-- At what point did the term "athletic freak" become a compliment suitable for collegiate sports departments to describe incoming freshmen?

-- Stormin' Norman still draws a crowd in Mizzura.

-- How did we ever manage without Andy Katz' "blog" at ESPN? A daily must-must-must read. That being said, Katz in his latest column provides absolutely no evidence that Nevada must this season shoot better from behind the arc. To the contrary, the Wolf Pack's record last season is evidence that a low 3-point shooting percentage is not exclusive with regular and postseason success.
