An open letter to Bob Knight

[Upgraded from the Diaries--yoco]

Dear Coach Knight,

I, as a Red Raider fan, appreciate all you've done for this program.

You've helped us improve our aging library.

You've brought our basketball team's graduation rate up. Heck, you've forced our players to actually study and go to class, which James Dickey never did. Believe me, I was in a project group once with one of Dickey's players. He never showed.

You've taken us to some postseason every year you've been here. Not even current AD Gerald Myers could do that when he was coach.

Even for a die-hard Texas Tech fan, though, it's difficult to defend you sometimes. You take Texas Tech to the tournament in your first year on the South Plains, then you sue Indiana over his firing and give Mike Davis the silent treatment as Davis takes the Hoosiers to the Final Four. You take a team to the NIT semifinals, then you had that incident with our Chancellor, David Smith, at Market Street, Lubbock's upscale grocery store/cafe (ironically, located at 34th St. and Indiana Avenue). You know, the one with the salad bar?

Now that the Red Raiders have gone to the Sweet 16, you've gone off again. This time you've stated that had you stayed there, you and Sonny would have fired Mike Davis at season's end.

Coach Knight, we love you in Red Raider Nation, but please let the Indiana feud go. First off, you can't go back. Second. the person who fired you, Myles Brand, is no longer at Indiana. Third, every time you sue or comment about Indiana, it takes attention away from what you are accomplishing at Texas Tech.

On top of all that, you've got an important game against West Virginia, and all us Red Raider fans need you to focus for a couple reasons: One, They've got the best guard ever to wear a Mountaineer uniform since Jerry "The NBA Logo" West used up his eligibility: Mike Gansey. Two, They've got another quality big man in Kevin Pittsnogle, and we need you to work up whatever voodoo your team used against Gonzaga's Ronny Turiaf.

I know reporters like to ask you about Indiana because they want to try and draw a quote or soundbite out of you. Don't give in and answer. Just tell them "no comment."

Sincerely,
R. D. Baker
Texas Tech '01
