Bracketology

In the Diaries, Brendan Loy has kindly noted the would-be winners under each Final Four scenario of the First Annual Bloggers Bracket. It's between Andrew Long, William Seltz, Craig Cowell, Bret LaGee and Chad Dotson. Winner receives $50.

At Salon, King Kaufman notes that my lead in the "Pool o' Experts" has grown considerably. The only scenario under which I lose -- to CBS.SportsLine.com's users -- is if North Carolina wins the national title. Under any other scenario, including an Illinois win, I'm in the money. (Sort of).

It looks like [Yoni Cohen's] going to win it. Great, the one person most likely to actually claim the prize for winning this thing, which is dinner at my house, home cooking not implied.

I'll be in St. Louis in May. Yum.

If, that is, I actually win the Bracket. Which I never do. In other words, North Carolina is a darn good bet to cut down the nets.

Question for you, Yoni (none / 0)

Do you pay for this site's bandwidth?  In other words, do the ads cover everything?  Is the site self-supporting, or are you covering expenses out of pocket?

If it's the latter, I'll probably donate any winnings I might have (not counting any chickens) to bandwidth costs.  If you're coming out ahead, then screw it, I'll take the cash.

And in the "NCAA tournament is a cruel mistress" department, I stand a chance to win over $1,000 in my office pool.  What has happen?  Louisville needs to beat my beloved Illini (class of '01), and my dad's beloved Spartans (class of '60).  I'm still pulling for the Illini, but I guess it would be a nice silver lining if they lost.

Shredder, do you have someone lined up to post the Illinois fight song for a week if it comes to that?

No (none / 0)

I guess I could make the bet with Dial, or kevin.  I think that was a one time thing with Treder.  And he was a pretty good sport about the whole thing.

Answer for you, William (none / 0)

I do pay for bandwidth, but the expenses are more than covered by the ads.

Currently, I'm still working to recoup site development costs. (You may or may not have been a reader when the site was hosted at http://colllegeball.blogspot.com. The move to yocohoops -- and the addition of diaries, topical comments, etc. -- cost a pretty penny).

That being said, and while I very much appreciate the offer, I'll urge you to keep your loot. Kind of like the notion of rewarding the winner of the Bloggers Bracket.

As for the mistress...ooh. $1000 could buy you a trip to next year's Final Four.

I, btw, was crushed by Arizona's loss to Illinois. Though I picked the Fighting Illini in both my bracket and my column, I was pulling for the 'Cats. Had Arizona won, my chances of winning the "Pool O Experts" would have been significantly lower. But I would have gladly taken the hit to my rep. to see the 'Cats play in the Final Four.

My previous life as a bookie (none / 0)

I'm a huge Steeler fan. But I gotta tell ya, when I was heavy on the other end it was really hard for me to go against my money.

Here's a question: If you graduate from IU and get your MBA from Purdue, who the hell are you supposed to call your team? Should this have been a consideration when choosing a grad school?

IU (none / 0)

I would consider my undergrad my school.  I was Illinois law, but my undergrad (UC Riverside) was D2 at the time, and even though they're D1 now, it's not like it's a conflict.  That said, if UCR ever met Illinois, I'd be rooting hard for UCR.  As it is, UCLA is my other team (from growing up in SoCal), and I always root for UCR when they play UCLA.  Between UCLA and U of I, it would come down to who had a better chance at advancing.

My dad went to Purdue (none / 0)

I'm an IU grad but I always liked purdue's teams better. In Indiana it has to be one or the other. You can't be both. Now it's more Purdue football for me than anything.

I once went to a Pacer game on the night of an IU v. Purdue matchup and there were about ten people in the stands--all of them out of towners.
