UNI or Nevada (none / 0)

Still think UNI would take Nevada in any venue as you so boldly stated 3 weeks back?  The overrated MVC is being exposed the the tourney tested Wolf Pack handed the USU Aggies their ass in the Spectrum Center.  3 straight WAC titles don't lie.

Let's hear your comeback Yoni.  Bring it!

Nevada, but (none / 0)

(1) I don't recall writing same.

(2) I have (at Fox Sports) recently written about the Wolf Pack's recent success.

(3) Northern Iowa has lost a series of close games (save Bradley) and remains the same well coached and experienced club they were three weeks ago. They're still in my bracket -- and still dangerous in March.

(4) The MVC is not overrated. It merits at minimum four and at maximum six NCAA bids.

If the MVC deserves 4-5.... (none / 0)

Then certainly the WAC deserves at least 2.  But you and I both know that when selection sunday arrives, the MVC gets a max of 3 bids and the WAC gets it's auto-bid, pending a loss by Nevada in the tourney.

And BTW, your comments came in a string, not an article.  And I'm just giving you grief, I love what you do with this blog.  BUt you did say it so I had to call you on it.

In a perfect world the MVC gets 4 and the WAC gets 3 (USU, LT, NV)....But this world aint perfect.  While college basketball junkies realize the impressive nature of Nevada dismantling Utah St in the Spectrum Center, it will go unnoticed by most in the print media.  Anyways, keep up the good work and thanks for responding.

Thanks for the kind words (none / 0)

Yes, the WAC deserves two bids. Louisiana Tech's loss to NMSU Millsap & Co. consideration for an at-large bid.

But I'd be shocked if the MVC doesn't get at least four bids. Shocked.

Yes, the print media misses a lot. That's why I/we blog online...

MVc (none / 0)

The MVC deserves 6 bids, but will probably only end up with 4 as at least 2 of the top 6 will be one and out of the conference tourney.

Here is a bit of MVC statistical fodder to chew on:  Wichita St. ended the season in 1st place, but which team was 1st in scoring margin, FG%, steals, rebound margin, blocked shots, assists AND assist/TO ratio ?

The MVC (none / 0)

I'm not saying how many bids the MVC should get.  I don't know, and I don't pay close enough attention to enough conferences to make a great judgement.

But I have some concerns about the MVC's RPI and the big wins the teams have, essentially all against one another.

Big non-conference wins by the MVC (defined as Top 50 RPI teams outside of conference):

George Mason.
Iowa.
LSU.
Bucknell.
Western Kentucky.
Indiana.

Six games -- three by Northern Iowa.  Six big wins to measure against big losses.  And while many big conference teams shun the MVC, they could have had better schedules. Especially teams like Southern Illinois, who lost to Alaska Anchorage.

Yes, some big conference teams have weak non-conference schedule.  But if I were to take the BE for example, this is the list of non-conference Top 50 wins:

Hofstra.
Alabama.
Creighton.
NC State.
LSU.

Well, actually, that's the ten worst teams in the BE.

The six best:

Duke.
Oklahoma.
UCLA.
Wisconsin.
Arkansas.
Arizona.
Gonzaga.
LSU (again).
Indiana.
Oklahoma (again).
Bucknell.

My point isn't that the MVC is bad, it is that it is hard for me to gauge it.  And I think you have to be especially skeptical of a team like Southern Illinois.

Mason (none / 0)

Actually George Mason was 1-1 against the MVC - they beat Wichita State and lost to Creighton.
