C'mon. I think sometimes we're a bit nearsighted when talking about coaches or athletes. Think of this in terms of any profession. If you're getting paid $100,000 and someone comes along and offers you $500,000, and you meet management and they seem like good folks to work for, what do you do? In the real world? Selfish? Perhaps. A no-brainer? No question.

Why Southern Methodist? (none / 0)

Has anybody ever figured out that Southern Methodist is a stepping stone to nowhere other than the unemployment line? Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State basically have the state under lock and key.

SMU=potential (none / 0)

SMU has a ton of potential. If you can wake the sleeping HUGE dollar alum to the possibility of top 25 basketball in Dallas you could build a Gonzaga-type mid major program there. You wouldn't have to travel more than 50 miles to recruit top flight kids either. Matt was Roy's top recruiter when he was at Kansas and shouldn't have any problem getting B12-type talent to the SWC school. If Matt is as good a coach as people thought he was when he took the UNC job, he can make it work at SMU. SMU is a classic sleeping giant.

Coming on 4 years since he left for one of the best jobs in college basketball, we still have Illinois fans crying about it. Pathetic. Embarrassing.

Every coach in D1 athletics is a 'ladder climber' if you consider a 'ladder climber' someone that would leave Illinois for Kansas.

Is Howland a ladder climber for leaving Northern Arizona for Pittsburg or leaving Pitt for UCLA?
Is Thad Matta a ladder climber for leaving Butler for Xavier or Xavier for tOSU?
Is Billy Donovan a ladder climber for leaving Marshall for Providence or Providence for Florida?
Was Gene Keady a ladder climber for leaving Hutchinson for Arkansas or Western Kentucky for Purdue?
Is Tubby Smith a ladder climber for leaving Tulsa for Georgia or leaving Georgia for Kentucky?
Is Rick Barnes a ladder climber for leaving George Mason for Providence, Providence for Clemson, or Clemson for Texas?
Would you be a ladder climber in your career if you left McDonalds for Applebee's?

If you haven't caught on yet, almost EVERY coach at a top program has a career like this. Now quit embarrassing the rest of us Illini fans that understand the history and landscape of the game.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I graduated from UI in 93 and can't begin to tell you how embarrassed I am by the Illiniboard and other internet Illini bandwaggoners.

In 3 years it's gone from:
-Weber never should have gotten the job, we got jobbed by the refs, and I hate Bill Self to
-Weber is the best coach in D1 basketball, we got jobbed by the refs, and I hate Bill Self to
-Someone is paying all these recruits to not come play for Bruce, we got jobbed by the refs, and I hate Bill Self.

I would also like to point out that this is a strictly internet phenomenon: my live Illini friends have long since understood Self's leaving, have a wait-and-see attitude towards Weber (def a good hire, but not saying he's the second coming of Wooden), and only sometimes believe we got jobbed by the refs ;)
