Ummm...Olson will be at Arizona for many more years to come. And nobody at UA wants or likes Sampson. Thanks for playing, though.

Lute is running UA into the ground to a point where no coach is going to want the reigns in Tuscon. He's a HOF coach that needs to get out before he pulls a Gene Keady and ruins the program.

How's that? 22 straight NCAA appearances. 19 straight 20-win seasons. Highly-ranked recruit after highly-ranked recruit coming into the program. NBA player after NBA player emerging from the program. The guy who built Arizona Basketball. If that's running a program into the ground, most of the college basketball world should beg to be run into the ground.

That said, he will eventually have to retire. He's not getting any younger. If he goes until at least 2011, I can see them putting Pastner in charge or bringing Tention or Evans back in. I doubt Coach Rosborough will get the job, however.

Craig Esherick was fired from Georgetown, not Ronny (with a y, not ie) Thompson. Ronny left for Arkansas prior to Esherick's final season.

Sampson and Livengood (none / 0)

A lot of people have suspected Sampson to be a front runner if the job opened up in the near future because of his relationship with Jim Livengood, who was his athletic director as Wazzu and is the current AD at Arizona. I don't think Livengood would have picked him if he had to, but a lot of people thought so.

Coaches' stocks rise and fall all the time. It's hard to tell right now who will be the frontrunner when we have no idea how long Lute will be coaching. Lute seems pretty excited about Jerryd Bayless who won't be a freshman at UofA until 2007-08 so I suspect he will at least coach through Bayless' playing career.

Josh Pastner will be coaching Arizona soon. Olsen is merely keeping the seat warm for him at this point. The guy has been star-crossed to be a great coach ever since his playing career ended.

Pastner in 2011. Johnny Dawkins in 2011 at Duke. I think 2011 will be a crazy year for the coaching carousel.

Regardless of who gives Pastner a call, I expect him out of Arizona in the next three months. We all know that Lute has been expecting the same thing as well -- last summer he hired Reggie Geary and Miles Simon onto the coaching staff.

As the NCAA only allows 3 assistant coaches, and the 'Cats already had two (Jim Rosborough and Josh Pastner), Geary was pushed into an "administrative role". That's the same trick that Bill Self has used in the past, and part of me wants to say Roy Williams as well. Pastner will move on, and Geary will have had a year as 'shadow assistant coach' before moving into the newly available position.

i dont' know how much weight this carries seeing as how i'm a civilian outside the world of college sports but i spoke to steve lavin at the final 4 as he waited to go tape his segment for ESPNNEWS there at the Arts Garden. i asked why his name hasnt' been mentioned with many openings including the IU opening (whish i would have loved to see Steve come to bloomington) and he said that when you get a "gig" like this one, it has to be "the perfect job" to leave ESPN....not sure how soon we'll see Stevie on the sidleines
