Can player's who didn't sign with an agent still return to the NCAA? When is the cutoff for that decision?

The withdrawal deadline is June 18th. After that date, a player cannot withdraw from the draft, and the only obligations held by a player that does withdraw are to repay any expenses accrued in the draft workout process. This has become a valuable process for a lot of NBA hopefuls. It offers them a chance to workout with NBA-tier players and coaches, as well as a chance to get critiques of their talent and a 'professional opinion' of what areas of their game need work.

Of course, after this past season there is now the precedence set by Randolph Morris: there's a chance a player can return to his college team even if they don't withdraw from the draft. Morris did not withdraw, went undrafted, and the issue of whether or not he hired an agent remained horribly obfuscated (IMHO). As a result -- even though the NBA considers him a free agent now -- the NCAA let him return to UK after what amounted to a 14 game suspension.

This presents yet another reason for players to push their luck with the draft. We could see a player like Mustafa Shakur (Arizona) or Ekene Ibekwe (Maryland) deciding to stick it out through the whole draft and getting the short end of the stick. Meh.

Free Agency (none / 0)

He's an unrestricted free agent. Any team can offer him a contract at any time, conceivably even in the middle of the college season. There's even precedence for that sort of an exit: Christian Drejer signed a contract with FC Barcelona in the middle of the '03-'04 season and left.
