The Fall of the Cowboys

It's time to start talking about one of the greatest collapses in all of college basketball. That would be the fall of the Oklahoma State Cowboy's basketball program.

Diaries ::

Sean Sutton had the reins handed to him when Eddie retired(?) after an alcoholic relapse, and after a much better than expected start, oversaw an incredible fall from a top 10 ranking. After watching all of the Cowboy's basketball games, it became apparent to me that the defense that made OSU a great program was non-existent during the 2006-2007 season. The lack of effort was so obviously apparent and I believe that Sean's lack of head coaching experience is to blame. He just doesn't know how to motivate the players. Eddie Sutton was the master at getting the most out of his players - Sean seems to be just the opposite. He looks to be a great recruiter, but not a good basketball coach. The players on the roster have a lot of talent, but the captain of the OSU ship can't steer.

Reminiscent of Virginia (none / 0)

I believe it was four years ago, maybe three...Pete Gillen had the Virginia Cavaliers ranked 5th in the country in late January - maybe even February.  They missed the tournament.  Obviously, my memory is a little fuzzy, but it was a collapse possibly even more monumental than Oklahoma State's.

After digging deeper... (none / 0)

So I did a little research.  In the 2001-2002 season, Virginia was ranked 7th as of January 27, 2002.  From that point, it was a slippery slope.  They missed the NCAAs and went out in the first round of the NIT.  Oklahoma State was ranked 10th when they played KU on January 10, and that's really when it started to go pear-shaped.  It's an impressive fall, but not quite as impressive as the Cavaliers.
