Hoya Paranoia, Ex-'Cuse Me?
Might Georgetown and/or Syracuse miss the NCAA Tournament?
Georgetown has a sky-high RPI of 23 and "quality wins" over Connecticut (in Storrs) and Memphis and Syracuse (in Washington). But JTIII's club has "bad losses" to Notre Dame and Seton Hall and two losses to Cincinnati.
After today losing to Cincinnati at home, the Hoyas have lost five of their last six (and seven of their last 10) games. Georgetown has also won only a single game in a hostile environment.
Up next for the Hoyas? A road trip to Syracuse, also a bubble squad in desperate need for a victory.
The Orange have a similar RPI, 22, and big wins over Florida and Kansas (in Kansas City) and Memphis (in Memphis). But Jim Boeheim's team has lost to Cleveland State and Providence.
After yesterday losing to Villanova, the Orange have lost four of their last five (and six of their last 7) games.
Still, even with a loss to Georgetown, it is hard to imagine a scenario under which Syracuse would finish worse than 8-8 (or even 9-7) in the Big East, which should be enough to send Jonny Flynn, Eric Devendorf, and Paul Harris dancing.
Georgetown, on the other hand, cannot afford to lose to Syracuse. Lose to the 'Cuse and the Hoyas will head into the second half of February on the outside of the tournament bubble looking in.
